Host your own grassroots event!

The NRC's grassroots program was created to invite United States Congressmen to visit NRC member facilities and construction project sites. These visits give the Members of Congress firsthand knowledge of the rail industry and demonstrate how rail contractors and suppliers are positively affecting the rail industry and the local and national economy. If your company is interested in hosting your Congressman for a visit, please contact Lindsey Collins at lcollins@nrcma.org to begin the process.
Carter Lake, Iowa – On April 20, U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) joined National Railroad Construction & Maintenance Association (NRC) – Paxton & Vierling Steel Co. (PVS) – for a tour of their metal service center and structural fabrication facilities in Carter Lake, Iowa.

Attendees included:

Hon. Joni Ernst
Mr. Ed Korbel, CFO, Owen Industries
Mr. Tyler Owen, Executive Vice President, PVS
Mr. Keith Siebels, Vice President of Sales, PVS
Mr. Craig Bence, Manager of IT, Owen Industries
Ms. Donna Kush, VP of Public Relations, Union Pacific
Ms. Lindsey Collins, VP of Grassroots Advocacy at NRC

Mr. Owen gave an overview of PVS and their operations. PVS is a division of Owen Industries, a family owned steel fabrication and steel service company. PVS is one of the top industrial fabricators in the United States, producing a variety of quality structural steel products for projects around the world, including a number of bridges for our rail network.

Mr. Owen gave a tour of the facility, which includes both PVS’s Metal Service Center and Structural Fabrication facilities. Their steel fabrication and metal processing operations employ 210 people on this 30 acre site, which includes a 500,000 square foot fabrication facility. The facility is serviced by freight rail, providing access for transportation of completed products to project locations throughout North America.

“I enjoyed visiting Paxton & Vierling Steel Co. to learn more about this family-owned business that employs hardworking Iowans,” said Senator Ernst. “It was helpful to learn more about their facilities and hear about their products, which can be found all around the world.”

Senator Ernst was elected in November 2014 as the first woman to serve in federal elected office from the State of Iowa and also became the first female combat veteran elected to serve in the US Senate. She serves on four Senate Committees of major importance to Iowans: Armed Services; Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; Environment and Public Works; and Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
